Slavko Curuvija established the first independent daily in Serbia \u2013 \u201cDnevni Telegraf\u201d at the beginning of 1996.<\/p>\n

The newspaper became popular within a short period of time, reaching a circulation of more than 100,000 copies. The \u201cDnevni Telegraf\u201c gained the trust of citizens thanks to objective, uncompromising and bold coverage at a time when the Serbian media scene was ruled by the Milosevic couple, together with their associates.<\/p>\n

October 13, 1998<\/strong><\/p>\n

Aleksandar Vucic, the Serbian Minister of Information at that time, warned the \u201eDnevni Telegraf\u201c, \u201eNasa Borba\u201c and \u201eDanas\u201c that they would face a ban if they continued to write from that moment on.<\/p>\n

October 14, 1998<\/strong><\/p>\n

The \u201eDnevni Telegraf\u201c and \u201eDanas\u201c were banned by a special media decree.<\/p>\n

After the ban, the newspaper was published in Montenegro.<\/p>\n

Slavko Curuvija was sentenced to five months in prison as publisher of the \u201cDnevni Telegraf\u201d and for his journalistic engagement. His lawyers managed to intervene and prevented his imprisonment.<\/p>\n
